Advay Mengle Tension Intention
Paintings and photographs built from contradiction: gloss and matte, impulse and control, chromatic force and structural restraint.
Read the blurbForce becomes decision.
Tension Intention marks Advay Mengle’s debut solo exhibition. Bringing together paintings and photographs, the exhibition moves between expressionist figuration, hard-edge geometry, lyrical abstraction, and images drawn from direct encounter with the world. A number of the paintings emerge from Mengle’s Dynamic Divisionism, a signature approach drawing on Divisionism and action painting, built through bold color, divided form, and charged material contrast.
The exhibition foregrounds contradiction as both subject and method. Across the works, oppositions between gloss and matte, impulse and control, chromatic force and structural restraint remain in active tension. The title names the charged interval in which spontaneous material action becomes authored intent. Rather than resolving these tensions, Mengle holds them open, allowing each work to remain visibly shaped by pressure, revision, and decision. The result is a body of work that resists passive looking and insists on the physical and psychological force of the image.
Not balance. Held pressure.
A sequence of surfaces, ruptures, and direct encounters.
Each work is treated as an event in the exhibition’s larger argument: image as pressure, image as evidence, image as decision.
Expressionist pressure meets controlled presentation. The work is given space rather than surrounded by explanatory noise.
Each work is held between impact and restraint, compressing gesture, structure, and force into a charged visual field.
